Research and Writing

Andropogon publication

Andropogon
Academic publication, Conservation genetics, Flow cytometry

This piece represents the culmination of my time as a conservation genetics lab assistant in the form of a co-authorship. The intent of the project overall was to explore the heritage, diversity, and reproduction of a key grassland species. I was intimately involved in the processing of samples at both University of Guelph in Ontario and Principia College in Illinois. I was also involved in the final edit of the writing piece.

Genetics work substantially helped me in deciphering technical language quickly, a skill that is important to me. It also increased my attention to detail and precision in all the I do-- those tiny vials of genetic samples require a steady precise hand to complete the flow cytometry process.

Marine Pollution Scoping

Research and writing, environmental policy, marine pollution

A selection of my peers and I at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies were invited to attend the plenary meeting of Contracting Parties to the London Convention and London Protocol (LC/LP) in 2015 as an observer group. This sample writing piece represents my research on a select topic of marine pollution following the preparation for this London Protocol meeting. It demonstrates the ability to synthesize literature on marine conservation and policy issues and present both the problem and suggest possible ways forward.

Marine Pollution

National Ocean Economics Program

NOEP
Analysis, database management, research and writing, ArcGIS

I worked for the National Ocean Economics Program as a research assistant on the economics of marine uses, including marine aquaculture and alternative energy within the marine environment such as using wave and tidal energy to produce electricity. I was in charge of curating the databases on these topics, writing content for the website, and performing basic economic calculations. Some of my work can currently be seen at their website.

My time at NOEP was useful and allowed me to secure a fellowship at the National University of Ireland, Galway where I was able to put similar skills to use in a project on the economic valuation of marine recreation.
